MANILA, Philippines ?? Philippine singing sensation Charice on Sunday defended herself from criticisms that surfaced following her recent appearance in a popular gay bar in the United States to promote her current international single "Pyramid."

Charice, 17, told ??The Buzz? in a live interview that she was surprised that some people made a big deal out of her appearance at Club 57. She said it was not the first time that she went to clubs in order to promote the remix version of Pyramid.

??Hindi lang ako ??yong nagpro-promote sa mga club. Ganoon talaga sila sa US??. umaalis na po ako [after ng performance ko]. Nagpe-perform lang po talaga ako," she said.

MANILA, Philippines - KC Concepcion has been regarded from the start of her career to be the kind of artist who knows what she wants and how to get it.

From her inimitable fashion sense and her much-talked about production numbers on TV and concerts, to the eclectic roles she chooses in the movies and the select endorsements and advocacies she takes on, KC is heading into one clear direction: The top.

No wonder her independent-mindedness has redounded to her music. In her sophomore disc titled KC under Sony Music, KC wrote three of the 12 tracks namely Magandang Umaga, Takip Silim and Worth That Wait which talk about the different phases of a love story.

KC produced with Jinno Mina the Hulog, Naantig Ako Sa ??Yo, Girl Most Likely To and Tayo Na. The assumption of the responsibility belies her growing confidence not only on commanding center stage but also behind the scenes as she herself maps out a trajectory all her own.

KC is taking over the wheels slowly but surely; steering it to a path where even some of those who claim to be brave, dare not go. KC, after all, is an all-original album ?? something even more established artists have shunned doing in these days.

For some strange reason, the boy group was one worldwide phenomenon that Filipino artists and producers were not able to adapt to local tastes. We are usually so good in these things. We hear a new sound from the US and you can bet that within a few weeks there would be a Pinoy version. The same goes for every sort of music type. Think rock, folk, R&B, hip-hop etc., and we have all twisted and tweaked them to our liking and made them our own. Not so the boy band.

I am sure that many of you still recall that time during the late ??80s when boy groups are all the rage in the hit charts. The Backstreet Boys kicked things off to a great start. Then came ??N Sync, Boyzone, 98 Degrees, Westlife. Even the Puerto Rican boys of Menudo totally captivated the Filipinos. To this day, fans still show up to watch them do Everybody and Quit Playing Games With My Heart whenever the BSB are in town and although he has had tremendous success as a solo artist, we still peg Ricky Martin as an ex-Menudo because that is how we know him best.

It was not for lack of attempts on our part. Some, like the Wiseguys had some degree of success. I guess that while they only danced and did not really sing, the closest we came to having young male idols in a group was with the Universal Motion Dancers or the UMD. They were big on TV and even appeared in the movies. Still we never came up with a song and dance boy group that could have challenged the foreigners and could have established a strong foundation for future incarnations of this type of act.
