Ogie Alcasid is paying homage to noted Filipino composers in his new album aptly titled "The Greatest Filipino Song Book" under Universal Records.
"Medyo matanda na ako kaya napapanahon na rin," said Ogie laughing. "This is really the first time that I?ve done an all-revival album."
Ogie admitted that the songs in the album inspired him to compose songs.
Included in album are popular OPMs that have become classics. These masterpieces are from noted Filipino composers like Marvic Sotto ("Kung Sakali Lang" and interpreted by Pabs Dadivas), Louie Ocampo and Joey Albert?s original "Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin," Willy Cruz ("Kahit Na," interpreted by Zsa Zsa Padilla, "Doon Lang" sang by Nonoy Zu?iga, "May Minamahal" sang by Haji Alejandro), Rey Valera ("Kung Tayo?y Magkakalayo"), George Canseco ("Ngayon" interpreted by Basil Valdez), Ryan Cayabyab Ryan Cayabyab ("Nais Ko" interpreted by Basil Valdez) and Dero Pedero?s "Bawat Sandali."
Other songs in the album are "Bato sa Buhangin" by Snaffu Rigor and National Artist Ernani Cuenco, Florante?s "Handog," "Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga" by Cecile Azarcon, "Kailangan Kita," "Yakapin Mo Ako," "Malayo Pa Ang Umaga" and Rico J. Puno?s "May Bukas Pa" by Charo Unite with lyricist Ernie dela Pe?a.
Ogie shared that he and the people from Universal Records worked on the album for four months.
The composers he paid tribute to were his personal choices. He admitted though that missing is Jose Mari Chan which he hoped would be included in his next album.
"This was the best concept we came out with. Actually I call it a tribute album and I?ve always been wanting to do a tribute concert because these are my musical heroes as I call them...I didn?t rearrange the songs because it was more of my producer Ito Rapadas whom I collaborated with. The good thing was that we both have the same vision for this album," he added.
Ogie said he wanted the songs to be easy listerning and not ditties that would make the listeners cry.
"Kinagisnan ko lahat ng mga kanta na yan...my biggest influence would be Rey Valera. In terms of lyrics I can never get to the level of George Canseco. He is really a poet. It?s his gift," he quipped.
He explained his choice of Pabs Dadivas? song "Kung Sakali" as his album?s carrier single.
"I know Pabs talaga so nung marinig ko yung kanta naalala ko agad yung song. And it became the carrier single kasi siya yung pinaka-pop sa lahat. The rest kasi are for movie theme songs which are all excellent songs. ?Kung Sakali? is easy on the ear," he related.
"Kung Sakali" also has its music video which stars Marian Rivera.
Ogie will also celebrate his 20th anniversary in showbiz via a major concert at the Araneta Coliseum on Sept. 27. His special guests are Regine Velasquez, Janno Gibbs, Michael V and Jaya. |
